So, I figured: “How hard could it be? You just take a cookie cutter to a flat sheet cake and decorate it like I do the big pan. And, maybe I’ll even make color the icing to look like a football.”
Yeah, not so much.
First off, the cake was too thick for the first cookie cutter I had, and the brown Wilton icing coloring I had came out looking beige for some reason.
Take two — metal cookie cutter, cut them in half and just stick with plain white and use chocolate to make the lines. Way more effective.
What I used:
1 box Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge cake mix
1 container of white icing
1 container of chocolate icing
2 Wilton disposable decorating bags
Decorating tip 16 for the stars (white icing) and 4 for the lines (chocolate icing)
Prepare cake mix as directed on the box in a 13×9-inch pan, and let cool completely. Set up two decorating bags according to the directions on the box. Fill the bag with tip 16 with white icing and tip 4 with chocolate.
Slowly press a football shaped cookie cutter through the cake. Be sure to use a cookie cutter that doesn’t have a lip.
Once the cookie cutter is through, gently pull the cake away from the cookie cutter.
Put the cut-out piece of cake on another surface and gently push out the cake from the cutter, and then slice the piece in half.
Using tip 16 outline and then fill in the football using the white icing.
Using tip 4, make a line across the football and then add three small lines across it. This is where you need a steady hand to start and stop the lines.
